DUTY

DUTY

-By Rajeeva Nayan Pathak

What is Duty? Duty means doing what is right — not what is easy.

In Sanatan Dharma, it is called Dharma, the rule of right living. When everyone follows their Dharma, peace, love, and happiness grow in the world.

Lord Krishna’s Teaching -The Gita’s Message: When Arjuna was afraid to fight for truth, Lord Krishna said: कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन। “You have the right to do your duty, but not to the fruits of your actions.” -Bhagavad Gita, 2.47

Krishna taught that we should do our work honestly and not worry about the result. True peace comes from doing our duty with a pure heart.

Mahabharata says- धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः। “Dharma protects those who protect it.” -Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva

When we act truthfully and do our duty, Dharma itself keeps us safe. If we forget our duty, we invite our own troubles.

Kautilya’s Arthashastra -Duty of a Leader “The happiness of the people is the happiness of the king; their welfare is his welfare.” -Arthashastra, Book 1, Chapter 19

A true leader serves others before himself. In the same way, a good student, teacher, or citizen works for the good of all.

Kalidasa’s Raghuvamsha gives त्यागाय संभृतार्थानां सत्याय मितभाषिणाम्। “They earned for giving, spoke the truth, and lived with restraint.” -Raghuvamsha, Canto 1, Verse 7

Kalidasa described kings who ruled not for pride but for service. Real duty means serving others with honesty and care.

Wordsworth’s “Ode to Duty” - The Moral Guide

“O Duty! if that name thou love,

Who art a light to guide, a rod

To check the erring, and reprove.”

-William Wordsworth, “Ode to Duty” (1805)

Wordsworth called Duty the “light” that shows people the right path. Perhaps, Inspired by  Lord Krishna’s teaching, he believed that following Duty brings peace and strength.

Duty is for everyone — not just kings or heroes. A student’s duty is to learn and respect teachers. A child’s duty is to love and obey parents. A teacher’s duty is to guide with kindness. A citizen’s duty is to follow the law and care for nature.

When we all do our duty with love and truth, the world becomes brighter and happier. From Krishna to Kalidasa, from Kautilya to Wordsworth, everyone taught the same truth,

Duty is the light that guides life. When we follow our duty with love and faith, we not only make ourselves better, we make the whole world shine with goodness.
